about

It seemed odd at first to start a debut album with a remix of a relatively unrelated band.Yet Blueprint Comedown get away with remixing eighties oz rock legends Dragon into a dubby loopy moby-ish reinvention that rolls along like a lazy late summer afternoon. I would never have picked it as a Dragon track- it serves as a perfect intro, setting the tone beautifully for an album that meanders through styles and modes with absolute ease and comfort.

I can imagine the two conspiritors fluidly swapping samplers, guitars and vocals as the mood takes them. Their greatest acheivement with this album is not actually the fantastic songs (and they are fantastic), but the fact that their production gives the album such a brilliant flow that every song is distinctly a blueprint comedown song - despite the diversity of style, and the album is such a cohesive whole that it just gets better with each listen. Not entirely surprising when the liner notes state that they produced it all themselves!

Here's a bit of a rundown on some of the tracks - Rotten to the Core - angelic vocals over subtly effected mellow guitar, a counterpoint to the lyrics which are intriguing and contrast the sensual vocal delivery. Harmonising contrasting elements appears to be second nature to Blueprint Comedown, exemplified by Technology Head - pseudo operatic vocals over synth (which then receives rock treatment with a pounding beat, distorted guitar and vocals that are almost snarling).

Urgency moves with ease from what could be a female equivalent of Billy Bragg spouting poetry on acid in the middle of a church service, into a loopfest that reminds me strangely of Big Audio Dynamite's live stuff...(when B.A.D where good). Then there's the track - 389 vocal effects, loops, beats, acoustic guitar and a ballad on the public transport state of mind with some beautifully placed sampling, particularly the messed up guitar loop.

Metal Moon is a bizzare samplefest (dripping tap, messed up vocal, pounding distorted beats and guitar) with both Blueprint Comedowners contributing vocals - here the vocal reminds me of Jesus Jones. The noise assault also kind of reminds me of My Bloody Valentine. This then moves into some clean electro beats and synth loops, back to the vocals, barking dog, helicopter reverb and that dripping tap. Intriguing, and very cool 'cause they make it all work so well.

Electric features beautiful guitar, well placed string samples (I think they're samples), noise manipulation and that silver and honey voice in spoken word mode, and a sweet electro beat intermission.

If you're a fan of mellow, chilled out, atmospheric stuff, some beats and a dash of rock, this is a brilliant album that you're going to love.
